Family Matters: Tough love – is it helping or hurting?

Speaker 1: Seven, no family matters. Speaker 2: So you know, love is not always gentle. I know when we speak about love, Speaker 2: we think, you know, it's soft and it's gentle, and it should feel good. But Speaker 2: the reality is, for many South African families, toughness and love have long gone hand Speaker 2: in hand, and many of our families, you've had to do something painful for a Speaker 2: loved one, hoping that you know they will come out on the other side better Speaker 2: and they will see your intentions. But where's the line drawn between tough love and Speaker 2: emotional harm? You know, oftentimes tough love refers to the practice of setting firm boundaries, Speaker 2: especially when you feel like you've done it all and there's nothing more that you Speaker 2: can do for this person. You withhold comfort. You're in force strict consequences out of Speaker 2: a genuine desire to help someone grow, with the hope that they will grow. And Speaker 2: while it's often well intentioned so we mean well, when we give tough love, it Speaker 2: can cause lasting psychological and emotional damage, particularly in children and young adults.
