Family Matters - Feeling disconnected from where you come from due to trauma and how people can heal from it

Speaker 1: Family matters. Speaker 2: So I want us to have a conversation this morning about something that people may Speaker 2: not understand if they have not experienced it, and that is the disconnect that some Speaker 2: people feel from home where they come from. And I want us to talk about Speaker 2: how we can heal from that. So what do I mean by that? For many Speaker 2: people, home is supposed to be the place where they feel the safest. Right when Speaker 2: you think of home, one of the things I would imagine you think of as Speaker 2: safety. But when home is shaped by abuse, toxicity, or some kind of hostility, whether Speaker 2: that's physical violence, or it's constant manipulation and control, an unsafe neighborhood just outside the Speaker 2: front door, that can leave people feeling deeply disconnected, not just from a place, but Speaker 2: from the family and the community that they grew up in. Domestic violence, toxic or Speaker 2: manipulative family dynamics, and growing up in a hostile neighborhood are some of the most Speaker 2: common causes of this kind of disconnection. And maybe you listening to us this morning, Speaker 2: and you witnessed violence between your parents when you were growing up, and as a Speaker 2: result, that has made you feel a bit disconnected with home, So you don't like Speaker 2: going home to visit, or when you go, you probably spend just two nights, one Speaker 2: night, three nights, and you're out because that home for you represents a return to Speaker 2: a place that traumatized you.
