Speaker 1: Family Matters, Future Family Matters. Speaker 2: So we are having a conversation on our Family Matters feature this morning about the Speaker 2: effects of incarceration on families. And I think often when we talk about people who Speaker 2: get incarcerated, who get imprisoned, we don't focus on the scars on those. Speaker 1: That are around them, their loved ones. And that's the attention we want to tend. Speaker 2: This conversation to this morning, and that's because when someone goes to prison, it's easy Speaker 2: to think the punishment stops with that individual, but the reality is the sentence often Speaker 2: extends far beyond those prison walls. It reaches spouses, it riches parents, it riches children. Speaker 2: So this morning, I want us to unpack those hidden emotional costs of incarceration, like Speaker 2: what happens to families when a loved one is behind bars. There's a lot of Speaker 2: things that they have to mourn, but there are also a lot of things that Speaker 2: the family itself has to go through in the community, where you've got community members Speaker 2: that start looking at you down as a family. Maybe you are ostracized as a Speaker 2: family because your loved one has committed a heinous crime and is now behind bars. Speaker 2: What has happened to your family when your loved one got incarcerated. Speaker 1: Huh. Speaker 2: Psychologists often tell us that incarceration can functure families. Maybe there are disagreements even in Speaker 2: the family unit about do we even support the person who's been incarcerated or not Speaker 2: do we go visit them in hospital in prison?
